HEAD-TO-TOE MUSLIM VEILS TEST TOLERANCE OF SECULAR BRITAIN
(By Jane Perlez / Source: International Herald Tribune) Increasingly, Muslim women in Britain take their children to school and run errands covered head to toe in flowing black gowns that allow only a slit for their eyes. Like little else, their appearance has unnerved Britons, testing the limits of tolerance in this stridently secular nation. Many veiled women say they are targets of abuse. At the same time, efforts are growing to place legal curbs on the full Muslim veil, known as the niqab. The past year has seen numerous examples: A lawyer dressed in a niqab was told by an immigration judge that she could not represent a client because, he said, he could not hear her. A teacher wearing a niqab was told by a provincial school to go home. A student who was barred from wearing a niqab took her case to the courts, and lost. In fact, the British education authorities are proposing a ban on the niqab in schools altogether.

ALEXIS II FUSTIGE LES HOMOSEXUELS SOUS LES APPLAUDISSEMENTS D’UNE PARTIE DU CONSEIL DE L’EUROPE ET LE SILENCE DES MEDIAS
La visite historique du patriarche orthodoxe russe Alexis II en France s'achève ce jeudi. Quatre jours passés au «pays des libertés et des Droits de l'Homme» pour marquer une étape importante dans la défense des valeurs chrétiennes et morales. Résultat: profession de propos homophobes contre lesquels nul ne s’est publiquement élevé au sein de l’Assemblée parlementaire du Conseil de l’Europe. Encore moins son président René van der Linden qui a salué le «message de paix et de tolérance» du patriarche ! POLLING BRITISH ASIAN IDENTITY
In a poll commissioned by the BBC to coincide with the 60th anniversary of the 1947 independence of India from Britain and the official founding of Pakistan it emerged that a third of 16-34-year-old British Asians do not feel British, three-quarters felt their culture was being diluted by living in the UK and nearly half believed white people do not treat them as British. However, one key aspect that the survey seemed to ignore is how British Asians define being British.

SALMAN RUSHDIE’S KNIGHTHOOD ANGER
Indian-born writer, Salman Rushdie may be a wanted man amongst Muslims, but in Britain he is a hero. During the weekend, he was knighted by the English Queen Elizabeth II, in honor of his writings and outstanding achievements. SVP, DAVANTAGE DE BLAGUES SUR LES MUSULMANS
Il y a quelques jours de cela, je me suis enfin décidé à regarder le film de Sacha Baron Cohen. Mais «Borat» m’a déçu. Non pas en raison de l’humour de l’auteur qui ne m’a guère transcendé - seules quelques blagues sur les Chrétiens et les Juifs américains m’ont arraché un léger rictus - mais parce que nulle blague sur les Musulmans y était faite. Pourquoi une telle absence? Cohen aurait-il manqué de courage? A voir le personnage, j’avoue avoir du mal à imaginer que tel puisse être le cas. Mais mon sentiment est le suivant : de nombreux frères et soeurs de foi lui auraient été reconnaissants d’une telle mise en scène, et pas uniquement les seuls millions de musulmans présents aux Etats-Unis.

A HEROUXVILLE, TA FEMME TU NE BRÛLERAS PAS
L’histoire aurait pu être tirée d’un roman de David Lodge ou d’une comédie de Woody Allen. Au moins pour le ton. Mais non, l’affaire est sérieuse. Hérouxville, petite commune québécoise de 1300 âmes, bordée des forêts de la Mauricie et située à quelques 160 km au nord de Montréal, vient de se doter d’une nouvelle politique d’immigration… pour peu que le terme convienne véritablement. Le principe - adopté par le conseil municipal -, subordonner toute acceptation de demande d’immigration à l’acceptation (par le migrant) de certaines règles fondamentales. Jusque-là, rien de bien anormal. UNDANKBARE JUDEN
Es ist ja allgemein bekannt, dass die Juden besonders intelligent (Einstein), besonders geschäftstüchtig (Shylock) und besonders nachtragend (Auge um Auge...) sind. Sie sind aber auch, sozusagen von Natur aus, besonders undankbar. Immer wieder hadern sie mit ihrem Schicksal, beschweren sich darüber, was sie erleiden oder mitmachen mussten und verlangen Schmerzensgeld dafür, was man ihnen angeblich angetan hat. Kaum war der letzte Weltkrieg vorbei, standen die deutschen Trümmerfrauen auf der Straße und räumten die Ruinen weg, während die Juden, statt froh zu sein, dass sie überlebt hatten, Wiedergutmachung forderten. Sogar diejenigen, die rechtzeitig weggegangen waren und die Kriegszeit in Amerika oder Palästina auf eine angenehme Weise verbringen konnten, während Deutschland niedergebombt wurde, meldeten Ansprüche auf verlorenes Hab und Gut an. Millionen deutscher Vertriebener hatten auch alles, was sie besaßen, im Osten zurück gelassen, aber sie beklagten sich nicht, sondern packten mit an, um das Land wieder aufzubauen.

DU PORT DU VOILE AUX DISCRIMINATIONS ET VIOLENCES ENVERS LES FILLETTES
La Commission du statut des femmes de l’Onu débattra en 2007 des discriminations et violences envers les fillettes. Dans la République française, les droits des enfants sont strictement protégés. Défenseur des enfants, services sociaux, actions juridiques sont en place pour empêcher toute discrimination ou violence envers les fillettes. La défaillance des institutions provoque, immédiatement et à juste titre, l’indignation collective et des actions judiciaires. Le 20 décembre 2006, le tribunal correctionnel de Lyon a jugé l’auteur de coups sur une fillette de 7 ans parce qu’elle «parlait français à la maison». L’homme, compagnon de la mère, n’a pas adopté la fillette parce que «c’est interdit dans sa religion», par contre «taper de temps en temps, sans faire mal, ni faire de trace» n’est pas considéré comme un interdit. Il a été condamné à 4 mois de prison avec sursis. Le Parquet a logiquement fait appel.

HOLOCAUST: ANOTHER PROVOCATION – IRAN LAYS THE SCIENTIFIC GROUNDWORK FOR ELIMINATING THE STATE OF ISRAEL
Iran, the country where people feel so offended by some Danish drawings about the Prophet Mahomet, houses a two day conference on December 11 and 12 under the working title “Review of the Holocaust: Global vision”. Organized by the Institute for Political and International Studies (IPIS) in Teheran, the introduction gives the tone: “The word "Holocaust" which entered the political literature during the Second World War turned into one of the most important propaganda tools used to politically justify the support for the Jewish People in the 20th century.” Which translates into: “The term Holocaust was coined to serve the interests of the Jewish people.” There is enough historical evidence to prove the suffering of six million people who died in the concentration camps and questioning this evidence is an insult not only to the victims of the Nazi crimes, but also to every thinking citizen of the world.
