WHAT EU SHOULD BE TELLING TURKEY?

f2b1ad1354f93c78f2e4b848cc8901b0.jpgOn the eve of this year's progress report by the European Commission (EC), our European Union (EU) accession fever is revived again. A heavy traffic of meetings, statements and visits is the case. This hustle and bustle is as real as EU works are virtual. Mutual expectations are so low that even the tiniest “not negative” wording or an infinitesimally small gesture is exaggerated to the limit.  Works to be done are self-evident, it is said. Turkey will roll up sleeves, benefit from the rosy environment created after the July 22 elections, pass foundation laws, abolish articles 301 and sail away to the brightest of the bright horizon as though nothing has happened. That is playing Pollyanna to the utmost degree. We are talking about bilateral relations in which mutual trust is badly eroded. If only were easy to rekindle this! Let's see the facts.

TURKEY : LET’S LEAVE SARKOZY ALONE

b0e137022240ba379e71d688b5bb9287.jpg(By Mehmet Ali Birand / Turkish Daily News – Turkey) The president’s visit to the EU Council, constitutional debates, the PKK terror: None of these are as important to Turkey’s long term relations with Europe as the message that French Foreign Minister Kouchner brings to Ankara today. Here’s why.

MR. ITALA’S EU EXPANSION

medium_BY_THANOS_KALAMIDAS.3.jpgIn a televised interview, the Finnish Euro-MP, Ville Itälä made a very interesting comment that somehow reflects the skepticism of the last four years in Europe. He said that the EU has been far too forgiving of would-be EU members who don’t live up to their commitments.

PUTIN'S ENERGY

medium_BY_THANOS_KALAMIDAS.2.jpgWhat has already been predicted from the '50s, mainly from mad scientists and science fiction films, is the energy crisis, which is a reality here and now. In another of today's article, Christopher Wilkinson is also wondering "What is the death toll per barrel today?" Everybody can see that there is a limit in oil and the end is not lost in time, but is calculated so well that the American administration is ready to pay the cost with human lives and total environmental destruction like the one planned for Alaska. The Europeans, from their side, stand in the middle, literally in the middle. For a long time they have tried to talk about alternative energy resources, but somehow they don't feel confident with them, mainly because the use of alternative energy resources demands another series of environmentally friendly moves, plus control and reduction of production - something that none of the European governments are ready to accept and do.

When an MEP resigns, the Member State concerned has to inform the European Parliament of the name of his or her successor.
The directory is then updated. However, there may be a temporary difference between the official number of seats and the actual number of Members.
