IRAN AND VENEZUELA DON’T WANT US DOLLAR ANYMORE
Iranian president Mahmud Ahmadinedschad and Venezuelian president Hugo Chavez are not exactly what one would call friends of the United States of America. At the current OPEC conference in Riyad (Saudi-Arabia), the two declared that they are not longer willing to trade “valuable oil against worthless paper”, meaning the weak green buck which is generally blamed for the sky-rocketing prices of the barrel which traded today around 95 dollars the barrel.17:01 Publié dans ECONOMIE, ENGLISH EDITION, KAI LITTMANN, RELATIONS EXTERIEURES, USA | Lien permanent | Commentaires (1) | Envoyer cette note | Tags : us, south america, venezuela, iran, dollar, kai littmann, europeus.org

ANTI-SEMITISM IN GERMAN FOOTBALL?
When last night the German U21 squad took on their Israeli counterparts in Tel Aviv, one German player was sitting at home in Wolfsburg watching the match on TV. Ashkan Dejagah, born in Teheran and raised in Berlin, had actually declined his selection on the team, causing a major stir-up in German politics. While Dejagah only stated “personal reasons” for his refusal to play in Israel, the interpretation of his gesture is left to the media. It is true that Dejagah still has family in Iran and maybe he fears for their safety, given that since the Islamic Revolution back in 1979, no contacts between Iranian citizens and Israel are permitted, not even for sport events.19:08 Publié dans ENGLISH EDITION, KAI LITTMANN, SPORT | Lien permanent | Commentaires (0) | Envoyer cette note | Tags : anti-semitism, iran, football, germany, kai littmann, europeus.org

FORMER CIA OFFICIAL EXPECTS WAR WITH IRAN - SPEAKING FROM EXPERIENCE, PART II
(By Ken Silverstein / Source: Harper's Magazine - USA) Until recently, I thought the odds that the United States would attack Iran were less than fifty-fifty, but the chances of a military confrontation are clearly growing (as my colleague Scott Horton has been reporting on for some time). Earlier this year, I asked a former CIA official, who was stationed in the Persian Gulf during the first Gulf War and served in Iraq after the 2003 invasion, if he though the administration was planning a military strike. “I don’t think the administration is about to carry out military action,” he told me. “The military does not want to do this. We will lose planes if there is a massive air strike over Iran. We’ll have pilots killed and captured.” Yesterday, I called the official—who speaks with me only off the record—and he now believes a military strike is likely. Here are his comments, which I offer not as an endorseme:

IRAN: A CAROUSEL OF LIES & TRUTHS
It is strange how difficult it is for the average reader to find out what really happened with the 15 UK navy people in Iran. It is equally difficult to believe what happened with the Iranian hostage in Iraq and it is impossible to make any guess anymore. For that everybody is responsible, especially the governments with all this spin over the last few years - today you have no idea who says the truth and who’s lying.

AHMADJINEDAD IS READY TO STOP THE IRANIAN NUCLEAR PROGRAM. REALLY?
On Tuesday, the German news agencies dpa and dda had the good news: “Ahmadjinedad is prepared to stop the nuclear enrichment program”. Hey, this seemed to be good news for the world. The Iranian leader had obviously changed his attitude! Would this mean that Iran is coming back to the negotiation table with the international community and that there can be peaceful solutions? Sorry. No reason to celebrate. The headline was wrong. All wrong.
