IRAN AND VENEZUELA DON’T WANT US DOLLAR ANYMORE

f00aaf1a3de76e26e5a87948f62a4f4f.jpgIranian president Mahmud Ahmadinedschad and Venezuelian president Hugo Chavez are not exactly what one would call friends of the United States of America. At the current OPEC conference in Riyad (Saudi-Arabia), the two declared that they are not longer willing to trade “valuable oil against worthless paper”, meaning the weak green buck which is generally blamed for the sky-rocketing prices of the barrel which traded today around 95 dollars the barrel.

WAR IN IRAK: CONGRESS VERSUS THE COUNTRY

999b15e8225309505f112fb71a3d1878.jpg(By Alexander Cockburn / Source: Creators.com) There are limits to protest. Don't try to picket Bush or Cheney, even if you're in a wheelchair. Chances are the cops will Taser you and haul you off. But you can wear an anti-war T-shirt in pretty much every mall in America — though maybe not in the vicinity of Camp Lejeune, N.C. — and not even get spat on. We're not back in the difficult days of the early '60s when anti-war demonstrators faced brickbats and curses from the multitude. We're in the dawn of the 21st century when Main Street America has decisively turned against the war in Iraq, though only the merest handful of senators and U.S. representatives dare stand up and be counted. At the start of October — even after Gen. David Petraeus' suave performance on Capitol Hill, hyping his "surge" — only 27 percent of Americans wanted Congress to OK the $190 billion Bush requested for Iraq and Afghanistan. At the start of this week, the Washington Post summed up its latest poll, conducted with ABC TV, thus: "Most Americans do not believe Congress has gone far enough in opposing the war."

PAKISTAN : THE CREATION OF A MONSTER

91bee16db496f79744fc5a42efef1e83.jpgHow can you negotiate and trust somebody who took over a country with a military coup using all the resources the state gave him, exiled or imprisoned all the opposition with a lot of questionable disappearances and changed the state's constitution with only one aim to serve his personal interests? How can you trust somebody who ignored the will of the people and put them in chains hiding the key in his pocket and having openly expressed the will never to leave his powerful position?

add1f314d3ba53b015280343da15afb1.jpg(By Alexander Mooney / Source : Political Ticker – USA) Five days after MoveOn.org set off a political firestorm by publishing an ad in the New York Times attacking the top U.S. commander in Iraq, Gen. David Petraeus, the liberal advocacy group has set its sights on President Bush. The organization announced Friday it is rolling out a new national television ad campaign next week accusing Bush of "a betrayal of trust."

LOST IN SPACE

832de15d79d421037eea38054c623b9e.jpg(by TOM FINNIGAN / Source : Heritage Foundation – Washington) Last Thursday, the same day NASA confirmed that two of its astronauts had shown up to work drunk, the Government Accountability Office released a report exposing a startling “lack of accountability” within the agency that has led to the loss of more than $94 million in equipment over the last 10 years. The GAO audit, which found significant deficiencies in NASA’s “internal controls,” makes one wonder whether astronauts aren’t the only ones drinking on the job over at NASA.

YOUTUBE, TAKE TWO FEW GOP CANDIDATES COMMIT TO DEBATE

93d13a7b12a242c1069639ff0211fa53.jpgFour days after the Democratic debate in Charleston, S.C., more than 400 questions directed to the GOP presidential field have been uploaded on YouTube, as Republicans are scheduled to take their turn at video-populism on Sept. 17. But only Sen. John McCain (Ariz.) and Rep. Ron Paul (Tex.) have agreed to participate in the debate, co-hosted by the Republican Party of Florida in St. Petersburg.

MARTIN LUTHER KING DAY

medium_BY_JAN_SAND_1.jpgLike any other organization based on faith in a basic set of principles, a nation has its panoply of saints. Unlike the very strict hierarchy of the Catholic Church, a nation usually has no formal procedure for designating people as fitting this exclusive category and a great many candidates are advocated but not many make the grade without some doubts. Since sainthood somehow implies suffering to attain conformity to admired principles martyrdom greatly enhances that attainment. Perhaps the most obvious confirmation a nation can give for sainthood is to have a day designated to honor the individual chosen. Martin Luther King has fully qualified.

SHIFT IN AMERICAN POLITICS

medium_BY_THANOS_KALAMIDAS.13.jpgSo, what’s really going on in America? Is this the beginning of the end or a new era all together? When it comes to American politics we are looking at them from Europe, but there is more than an ocean separating us, This not only relates with the political system, but with understanding American society as a whole.

A NEW CHAPTER BEGINS WITH THE NOMINATION OF FORMER DIRECTOR OF THE CIA ROBERT GATES AS US DEFENSE SECRETARY

medium_BY_AMIN_GEORGE_FORJI.jpgEven before he embraces the job, the American people, like President Bush, seem to be unanimous in the view that Robert Gates, a former director of the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) is the right person to replace Donald Rumsfeld as Defense Secretary, who resigned from the post after coming under severe criticisms over his Iraq strategies.

DROITS FONDAMENTAUX: ATS ET MICHAEL CHERTOFF, OU LES NOUVEAUX VISAGES DE BIG BROTHER

medium_PAR_KAI_LITTMANN.5.jpgATS, «Automated Tageting System».
