FOURTY YEARS OF BBC RADIO ONE
At 7 a.m. on September 30th, 1967, BBC Radio One was launched with Tony Blackburn welcoming in the new broadcasting era with the words, "And, good morning everyone. Welcome to the exciting new sound of Radio 1!" That 'exciting new sound' has finally reached its fourth decade, although it should be stated that I was not born when the station was launched and my days of being a Radio One listener are now in the past.21:39 Publié dans ASA BUTCHER , ENGLISH EDITION , MEDIA | Lien permanent | Commentaires (0) | Envoyer cette note | Tags : media, uk, bbc, asa butcher, europeus.org

POLLING BRITISH ASIAN IDENTITY
In a poll commissioned by the BBC to coincide with the 60th anniversary of the 1947 independence of India from Britain and the official founding of Pakistan it emerged that a third of 16-34-year-old British Asians do not feel British, three-quarters felt their culture was being diluted by living in the UK and nearly half believed white people do not treat them as British. However, one key aspect that the survey seemed to ignore is how British Asians define being British.

FINNISH BOUNCERS AND EXCESSIVE FORCE
On Saturday night my English neighbour and his Finnish wife went out for a few drinks with some friends before they bid farewell to Finland and began their new life back in Britain. Midway through their evening at Zetor, a theme restaurant/nightclub in the centre of Helsinki, my friend underwent some brutal physical abuse from the club's security staff after he foolishly punched a Finnish man who had been sexually harassing his wife and then tried to steal her handbag.

THE GREAT SWITCH OFF
How many lightbulbs does it take to save the world? No joke here – it is a serious question that the Alliance for the Planet is asking its fellow citizens of the world. Today, February 1st, at 1855 GMT, French environmentalists are urging everybody to turn off all lights and gadgets in stand-by mode for just five minutes in a show of solidarity against global warming.
