POLLING BRITISH ASIAN IDENTITY

3b6894769b0ee8fd16ae4a0f5ea1ded3.jpgIn a poll commissioned by the BBC to coincide with the 60th anniversary of the 1947 independence of India from Britain and the official founding of Pakistan it emerged that a third of 16-34-year-old British Asians do not feel British, three-quarters felt their culture was being diluted by living in the UK and nearly half believed white people do not treat them as British. However, one key aspect that the survey seemed to ignore is how British Asians define being British.

FINNISH BOUNCERS AND EXCESSIVE FORCE

a4f7dedcba10d9e3b1dc1fea5dd138c0.jpgOn Saturday night my English neighbour and his Finnish wife went out for a few drinks with some friends before they bid farewell to Finland and began their new life back in Britain. Midway through their evening at Zetor, a theme restaurant/nightclub in the centre of Helsinki, my friend underwent some brutal physical abuse from the club's security staff after he foolishly punched a Finnish man who had been sexually harassing his wife and then tried to steal her handbag.

FOR TWO MINISTERIAL SEATS

medium_BY_THANOS_KALAMIDAS.28.jpgWhen we are referring to an environmental movement we are not talking about green trees and flowers, we are talking about the concrete that has destroyed our lives and our minds; we are referring to the concrete walls we have built in the name of consumerism and civilization. These are some of the things I talked with Petra Kelly one night during the late-80s in a friendly house in Berlin.

A DARK BLUE GOVERNMENT & JOLLY GREENS

medium_BY_THANOS_KALAMIDAS.26.jpgFinland’s electoral system leads to coalition governments where the small parties often play a very decisive role. For the last government the Christian-Democrats and the Swedish Party were the ones who managed to enter government and support the Center-Social Democrat government; this time things are a bit different.

THE FINNISH ELECTION’S BASKET

medium_BY_THANOS_KALAMIDAS.25.jpgElections in Finland have too many messages and an interesting number of possibilities. Living in Finland for the last decade and having seen a few elections, I would say that these are the quietest over the last few years and the most anticipated in a very unique way: Everybody seems to know the winner.

FINLAND’S NATIONAL ELECTIONS

medium_BY_THANOS_KALAMIDAS.21.jpgThe time for the National Elections is getting closer in Finland and you cannot help noticing that candidates and parties are gradually getting more aggressive in their campaigns. The two major parties, Keskusta (the Center Party) and SDP (Social-Democrats) seem to have found the balance after four years in a coalition government and their campaigns seem slower and calmer than they were four years ago.

FINLAND: ROAD TO INDEPENDENCE

medium_BY_THANOS_KALAMIDAS.7.jpgOn the 6th of December, Finland celebrates its 89th year of independence. The Finnish nation went through a great deal before it became a country often finding itself as a battlefield between the two mighty northern powers, Sweden on one side and Russia on the other.

MR. ITALA’S EU EXPANSION

medium_BY_THANOS_KALAMIDAS.3.jpgIn a televised interview, the Finnish Euro-MP, Ville Itälä made a very interesting comment that somehow reflects the skepticism of the last four years in Europe. He said that the EU has been far too forgiving of would-be EU members who don’t live up to their commitments.
