EU'S REGIONAL POLICY AND KURDISH QUESTION
The Republic of Turkey has a credibility problem regarding solutions to the Kurdish question. Accepting Kurds as interlocutors seems difficult for those ruling elites whether they are old-style Kemalists or new-fashion Islamists. Turkish governments' approach to comparable situations in other countries and mainly their stance on the Cyprus question shows a clear double standard. On Cyprus, policies to introduce an independent state, if not a federal structure are brought up, whereas a strictly centralist and �Unitarian� approach is adopted for the solution of the Kurdish issue. HEAD-TO-TOE MUSLIM VEILS TEST TOLERANCE OF SECULAR BRITAIN
(By Jane Perlez / Source: International Herald Tribune) Increasingly, Muslim women in Britain take their children to school and run errands covered head to toe in flowing black gowns that allow only a slit for their eyes. Like little else, their appearance has unnerved Britons, testing the limits of tolerance in this stridently secular nation. Many veiled women say they are targets of abuse. At the same time, efforts are growing to place legal curbs on the full Muslim veil, known as the niqab. The past year has seen numerous examples: A lawyer dressed in a niqab was told by an immigration judge that she could not represent a client because, he said, he could not hear her. A teacher wearing a niqab was told by a provincial school to go home. A student who was barred from wearing a niqab took her case to the courts, and lost. In fact, the British education authorities are proposing a ban on the niqab in schools altogether.

TURKEY: EXPECTING DEMOCRACY FROM AKP
Since 2002 the ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP) has been the lead actor in Turkey's democratic change. The European Union-inspired reforms and introduction of pious segments of society into the public sphere are the fundamentals of the party's democratic performance in its first two years. Today, based on these past credentials many are expecting the AKP to continue the reformist path. SALMAN RUSHDIE’S KNIGHTHOOD ANGER
Indian-born writer, Salman Rushdie may be a wanted man amongst Muslims, but in Britain he is a hero. During the weekend, he was knighted by the English Queen Elizabeth II, in honor of his writings and outstanding achievements. SVP, DAVANTAGE DE BLAGUES SUR LES MUSULMANS
Il y a quelques jours de cela, je me suis enfin décidé à regarder le film de Sacha Baron Cohen. Mais «Borat» m’a déçu. Non pas en raison de l’humour de l’auteur qui ne m’a guère transcendé - seules quelques blagues sur les Chrétiens et les Juifs américains m’ont arraché un léger rictus - mais parce que nulle blague sur les Musulmans y était faite. Pourquoi une telle absence? Cohen aurait-il manqué de courage? A voir le personnage, j’avoue avoir du mal à imaginer que tel puisse être le cas. Mais mon sentiment est le suivant : de nombreux frères et soeurs de foi lui auraient été reconnaissants d’une telle mise en scène, et pas uniquement les seuls millions de musulmans présents aux Etats-Unis.

Watch this and I bet you’ll be shocked in the first place. I was. The David Horowitz Freedom Center, a very honourable organization observing the political evolution around Israel, has launched a program called “Terrorism Awareness Program”, aiming to document the aggressive attitude of the Islamic world towards Israel. No question, this aggressive attitude of the Islamic countries towards Israel must be shown to the entire world. A HEROUXVILLE, TA FEMME TU NE BRÛLERAS PAS
L’histoire aurait pu être tirée d’un roman de David Lodge ou d’une comédie de Woody Allen. Au moins pour le ton. Mais non, l’affaire est sérieuse. Hérouxville, petite commune québécoise de 1300 âmes, bordée des forêts de la Mauricie et située à quelques 160 km au nord de Montréal, vient de se doter d’une nouvelle politique d’immigration… pour peu que le terme convienne véritablement. Le principe - adopté par le conseil municipal -, subordonner toute acceptation de demande d’immigration à l’acceptation (par le migrant) de certaines règles fondamentales. Jusque-là, rien de bien anormal. BENOIT XVI EN TURQUIE, LES FRUITS INATTENDUS D'UNE VISITE ETONNANTE
(Par JEAN-CLAUDE LECLERC / Source: Le Devoir - Canada) En quelques gestes mûrement réfléchis, le pape Benoît XVI a renversé en Turquie, à l'étonnement général, une situation qui risquait de tourner à la catastrophe. Tant sur le plan religieux que politique, le voyage qu'il vient de faire dans cette vieille terre chrétienne -- aujourd'hui musulmane -- laisse un bilan non seulement positif dans l'immédiat, mais aussi chargé d'espoir pour l'avenir. Il pourrait en sortir, en effet, un modèle nouveau pour les pays aux prises avec des allégeances conflictuelles.

DISCOURS DE BENOIT XVI : LE MATCH NUL DES RELIGIONS

Celle qui se mijote entre les religions a commencé dans le sang avec le 11 septembre 2001. Elle se poursuit dans les mots et dans les têtes. Le discours controversé du pape à Ratisbonne y ajoute sa touche. Emballement médiatique, dit-on. Le souverain pontife n’a jamais voulu blesser les musulmans, clame le Vatican. Vraiment? La lecture attentive du texte complet n’est pas rassurante du tout. Benoît XVI donne l’impression de comparer les religions dans un match dont le catholicisme doit sortir vainqueur. Pourquoi convoquerait-il cet empereur oublié de Constantinople s’il ne juge pas ses propos pertinents? Rappelons-le, ledit Manuel II, en 1391, interpellait un érudit persan: «Montre-moi donc ce que Mahomet a apporté de nouveau. Tu ne trouveras que des choses mauvaises et inhumaines, comme le droit de défendre par l’épée la foi qu’il prêchait.» Gloser sur le thème de la religion et de la violence est fort honorable. Mais comment un pape peut-il aborder le sujet sans évoquer ni de près ni de loin l’histoire de sa propre Eglise? (lire la suite)
