BARACK OBAMA: THE HOPE BECOMES THE 44TH PRESIDENT OF THE USA

However cliché I might sound this time, there is no time for celebrations, Barack Obama won and the victory party must finish soon, the new president and the Democratic Party must roll up their sleeves and start working before being even sworn in. You see George W. Bush and his neo-cons still have time to screw up things even more and they will do because among other things they are bad losers

VOTE OBAMA AND BRING THE WIND OF CHANGE

e3dd2f34982c0b29ad21d52868884ff6.jpgThe last few weeks with what has happened in the financial world, we have actually found out what was the essence of the Bush directive: Wait and it will be corrected alone. The amazing thing is that there are people who actually believed it and waited and they are ready to do so for another eight years. Another amazing thing is that this Bush directive was followed in every single issue making you wonder how the hell public health and insurance could work it self, while the only ones who have it are the ones who have the money to have it. And it didn’t stop there but it expanded in education, in employment making the poor poorer and more unemployed and homeless. The democracy of the United States of America found troubles even in its foundations with a president who ignored even basic human rights in the name of a war in the wrong place.

PERHAPS A CANCER IN EUROPE

d3a9e67c17dd081b87cfe579d7a3fb66.jpgThere is something that I have often emphasized, that Africa or south-east Asia are very far away in our minds, much more than they are in reality, and we have connected the embarrassing acts of our times, like human and drug trafficking, with these corners of the earth. The connection is not entirely unfair since a lot happens and there are states like the dictatorship of Myanmar that champion human and drugs trafficking; actually, the dictators of Myanmar hold the record in both ‘sports.’

A DILUTED GREED AND ECO-TERRORISM

fff475d4ae1f560b2308f0106442c986.jpgIn a link to the media, the Federation of Finnish Technologies Industries expressed their ‘uncertainty created by the energy and climate change package published by the European Commission that threatens to freeze investment in Finland’ and I had the sense that greed was drooling from everywhere.

RUDY GIULIANI AND THE HARE

3f22e1c35425ab1349e82915dda73a44.jpgWhile all the lights are on, Democrats Hilary Clinton and Barack Obama and Republican John McCain declares the old soldier’s heroic comeback, there is somebody missing: the 9-11 mayor Rudy Giuliani! The man has not shown up yet, even though the race has started and there are already some rumours for financial difficulties that I find hard to believe.

CHINESE TOYING WITH THE OLYMPICS

36999cdd2086a18cfe76a10e94848b26.jpgAnother blow for Chinese toys manufactures was the latest news from the USA and Australia with the recall of millions of toys due to a drug contained in the coating of the toys. I decided to check in my daughter’s room, not to make sure what toys were made in China, but how many things she has from the last Olympics in Greece.

I WANT YOUR... EUROS

60895f8325e6fd75a0aee9fc1dc39462.jpgWhat does it mean when a fashion model refuses to be paid in US dollar but insists on being paid in Euros emphasizing that the US dollar is not a strong currency? To many probably nothing, but to bankers it raises a most likely huge, gigantic question mark. The Brazilian supermodel Gisele Bundchen has been for sometime avoiding US currency payments because of uncertainty over its strength.

ANOTHER DARK DAY FOR PAKISTAN

dc4495ded0bc15277ca0b78bc0ffc11c.jpgA few months ago I was criticized because in one of my articles I was referring to General Musharraf as one of the worst dictators and I was sure that he has no intention to let Pakistan know democracy; after all, he was the last in a long chain of military dictators in this poor country. The commentator who, as he said at least, came from Pakistan was suggesting that perhaps democracy had a chance with General Musharraf and his slow and peaceful transaction from a militaristic dictatorship or regime, as the commentator argued, to a parliamentary democracy with control over corruption and violence. My argument to that was that if we only look at the 20th century, from Salazar, Franco, Hitler, Mussolini to Idi Amin, Marcos, Saddam Hussein and Musharraf’s predecessor Muhammad Zia we will see that the corruption of the politicians has been always their excuse to lead their countries to the edge of total catastrophe.

TURKEY: A KURDISH QUESTION MARK

1d6c0d31d157caac3ebba6e69430b0c6.jpgFor a very long time Turkey has learned to play the card of the country at the crossroads, a country between east and west, between Christians and Muslims, a country between Europe and Asia. Turkey has often been neutral but has been equally often playing the game of both sides also. They are pro-Palestinian and, at the same time, they sign military treaties with Israel. They want to be full members of the EU often using blackmails and opportunistic games and they like to be big brother to the middle Asian and other Muslim countries. For a long time they have stood in the gray shadows between the sides taking sides only when their opportunistic interests led them or when their militaristic, sometimes imperialist, dreams led them.
